It looks like Eco Lamps might be a little eager to sell their new K2 LED lamp. A tipster sent us a copy of Aqua Illumination’s brochure which lists their selling features for their LED lamp which looks strikingly similar to the selling features to the K2 LED lighting unit. For example the K2 states:
Superior Performance – Capable of producing as more powerful than a 250W metal halide system
And if you look at Aqua Illumination’s brochure it states:
Superior Performance Capable of producing as much light as a 400W 20000K metal halide system.
While having competition is great for all of us, we think that the LED lighting wars have just started to heat up. You can view the features of the K2 and have a look see at Aqua Illuminations features. So who is copying who? Who would you order from?
Thanks Greg!

Who’s copying who? That’s easy.
We (C2 Development – AquaIllumination) have had that marketing material for almost 18 months. The flyer copied was given out at MAX 2008 and we have used those phrases since our product’s inception in early 2007.
Hope that clears this up…

Chris, I don’t think you have to convince anyone that this Honk Kong company is copying you. As the new market leader in LED lighting technology, you should be flattered.
Def. Aqua Illumination. Not only have they been one of the few to survive the Orbitech debacle but they continue to try to look into different lighting technologies and it appears they wont seem content with just the status quo. Why would I bye a K2 when I can bye a Aqua Illumination system that I can use on my 29 gal right now and then expand it to fit a 120 gal I plan on keeping in a couple of years? Not to mention that it is built in the U.S. so I don’t have to worry about a 10% bonus….of lead, and I get the piece of mind that my money goes right back into the U.S. economy.
Competition is good, having choices is good, if the price points come down on these a bit more I’m sure the market would be ripe for any vendor.
I bought an AquaIllumination LED System myself as a supplement to my current lighting on my 90 gallon reef tank, and must say I am glad I did. Coral growth has increased and colors have gotten more distinct. The controller is one feature I just love. I still have the blues/halide/blues cycle, but with the AquaIllumination controller taking complete care of the final sunset and sunrises. Furthermore, I am tired of hearing people say tha the LED fixtures do “not actually run cooler than a metal halide per lumen as you see…”. I have both, and without a doubt the LED’s put out less heat than the halide per lumen OR Watt. That is to say, I like them and want another someday. Oh yes, and when that day does come, I’ll bet I am still running the original LED’s and will have changed out the halide several times.
I saw some data competition that KR92 has higher output than AI.
I will change my MH to one of Eco-lamps or Aqua Illumination.
I have K91 n K92 and I Love it.
