Here is a very interesting type of algae scraper for your aquarium which is said to give you “better cleaning results” with a unique blade design that “removes algae in sheets rather than in a cloud allowing easier removal and is tough enough to remove the most stubborn algae, even coralline algae.” It is also easier to use with a “hi-tech polymer blade that cleans without scratching and prevents grit getting stuck in cleaning surfaces, and if the magnetic coupling is released it floats.” Which reminds us of the mag float that is very popular. This design works on both flat sided or spherical aquariums made of acrylic or glass, although we wonder how well it would do for both glass and acrylic tanks because most alage removal devices use a strong type of magnet for glass. This green “UFO” retails for about $16.

As a business owner, I rarely comment negatively on products… but this one has some issues and needs to be much improved. While it does float and has a unique blade system, it simply cannot remove real algae build up from the acrylic walls of the biOrb.
Pros:
- Attractive design
Cons:
- The magnet is just not powerful enough
- Polymer blade traps particles and scratches the plastic
- Doesn’t work well, had to use a credit card to remove coralline algae
- It’s small, about 1″ in diameter
I even ordered another product similar to it: Mag-Float 20 Magnet Cleaner, while bigger it had the same
issues and I ended up modifying it with some Velcro to prevent it from scratching
Again, sorry for the bad press… just not a useful product.
any magnet cleaner of that size claiming to be able to remove coralline is questionable.
I bought one of these at http://www.EverythingBiorb.com – I like it, and the reason it reminds you of magfloats is because it was made by mag float for Biorb, and it works on soft algae, but definitely not the really hard stuff. So if you notice algae in your biorb you should take care of it immediately, don’t wait!
