The Eheim Compact Plus needle wheel water pump is a new water pump from Eheim with a performance motor block and a truly unique upside-down/inside-out impeller design. Although the pump is not made by Eheim (it is actually OEM’d in Italy by Eden) if Eheim put their name on it, we’ll give it some credit before even seeing it in action. The sub $200 needle wheel Eheim Compact Plus has a spec sheet which could hopefully one-up the needle wheel version of the classic Eheim 1262 which is often customized with a larger volute and impellers that push it’s price well over $300. The pump pushes 200-700 gph while drawing up to 36watts but there are no details as to what kind of air intake the Eheim Compact Plus draws while pumping those generous water flowrates. There is no word on this pump being mated with any specific protein skimmers but for now, this pump is probably a decent upgrade for owners of Euro Reefs and ASM skimmers using needle wheel Sedra 5000 or smaller pumps. The pump is available now from Premium Aquatics and Marine Depot, follow the link for a closer look at this pump with an Eden label.

I wonder how quickly the effectiveness is removed with the blocking of a few channels on that? It sure looks like a snail and chiton shell magnet.

@G – Hence the need to use some kind of effective prefilter, I believe there is a decent one included to go over the faceplate of this pump.

A chiton can climb through most pre-filters though and still be able to clog the impeller itself. It’s one of the benefits of being thin at one angle and thick at another :)
