elos-diy-led

A DIY took it upon himself to mount a custom LED to his existing E-lite, except that these LED’s are controlable, a feature that he was missing in the original E-Lite. He goes on to describe in his own words: “I wanted to get a controllable color range for the e-lite, so I rigged up a couple pieces of 1-1/4″ aluminum L-bar that bolt onto the e-lite. I used four white and four royal blue Cree XR-Es with 3023 buckpucks from ledsupply. So far I’m liking it, although my next pass at it will likely use 6 blues and 2 whites, as the white XR-Es (Q5 bin) are so powerful that by my estimates 1 white to 2 blue ratio would be sufficient to get a 12-25k+ color range.” It’s been several months for the PFO patent lawsuit and we still haven’t heard anything come out of Orbitec yet, as a result we will start seeing more and more custom DIY installations take place as the market goes tired of waiting for a commercial products to come out on its own.

LMAO way to void the warranty on a $900 light. Why not just sell it to someone who mus have a 'clean look' and DIY one that is brighter and controllable?

I don't see anything that would void the warranty. He bolted the "L" bracket to the E-lite through preexisting holes. If there is ever a problem, he would just need to unbolt the retrofit anf the E-lite is 100% stock again.

Cool idea – I have the original E-Lite and am dying to get more blue out of it. I was even thinking of strapping a couple blue Current PowerBrite LED strips to the bottom, hmmm…

I've "heard" that ELOS is releasing some cool new goodies for E-Lite actinic supplementation and maybe even a dimmable E-Lite type unit at the next InterZoo. I'll wait and see what the masters release ;)

That's from my post on RC =)

Certainly I'm aware of the warranty consequences, and since it was posted in the Elos forum on RC I'm sure Jesse@Elos is very well aware of what I'm doing. It is indeed a "bolt-on" piece, so no permanent changes were made to the original e-lite unit. All in the name of experimentation, isn't that what reefing is all about?

    Thanks for featuring it!

    Cheers

i dont think it is so much that people are waiting for the commercial products to come out it is that they just are not worth for how much they are.
