sea-hare

Algae. It’s a problem. It’s such a big problem that a recent study conducted found out the number one reason for quitting this hobby besides financial reasons was because they “couldn’t get rid of algae”. Seriously?  Along those lines one UK local fish store has a plan to solve your algae problems by use of a sea hare. You can rent him. Still with me? Here is how it works. Most of us know that Sea hares tend to favor algae. The problem with adding a Seahare into your tank is that after it’s gobbled up most of your algae it will eventually starve. Unless you plan on feeding him, which kind of defeats the purpose of having him. So instead you can rent the sea hare until your algae is cleaned up and then you can bring him back in “good health”. The store is charging £12.00 ($19) for this service and it’s not a bad idea. I’ll go one step further and suggest “rent a clean-up-crew”. Good luck trying to find and get them all out of your tank when it’s time to turn the crew back in. Hide-and-seek anyone?

this is a great idea – kind of expensive thou; should be half of that price.

fyi – they completely ignore corals. :)

When I had bad algae, I went to a local store and they had a sea hare for $40, the kid just kinda looked at me with a blank look like I was a complete nut-job when I asked, "How about I just rent him!" Man, I guess I was on something there and missed the boat—-AGAIN ;)

I used to get those things for less than $10. The problem, along with most nudis and lettuce slugs is that they tend to get killed easily. Powerhead/tunze intakes… overflows… or a curious hermit or emerald crab is all it takes. They are just too easy to lose. So my algae remedy has been to 'strip' the water using ethanol for a couple weeks, and keep a tang or two.
