You might know that reefers in Japan have many opportunities to access very colorful LPS, especially Trachyphy geoffroyi. One Japanese reefer, REEF, is an experienced reefer and he has been collecting Trachyphy geoffroyi for many years. When he buys Trachyphy geoffroyi, he is really critical about coral’s color pattern and potential. Lighting of his LPS tank is only 6 LEDs that are 3 x 2.5W 20000K, 1×2.5W Red LED, 1×4W Blue LED and 1×4W White LED with sky blue filter. At the beginning, he was wondering if he can maintain the color only with LEDs, but he really experienced that his LPS can maintain the awesome color only with total 18W LED. From the pictures it is clear to see that LED spotlights are ready to start lighting up some small reef aquariums.

Look good, although most of my LPS are in the "barely lit" sections of my tank, so its not terribly surprising he could pull it off. Granted not to take anything away it definitely is a cool thing he did.
Is the acro tank running on the same type of led light? If it is, those are some great lights. Can someone tell me where to buy those led? Great colors and great tanks, only wish I could understand Japanese to read more about those tanks.
I can't say for certain (not being about to read the writing on that page and all) but those look like those metal halide spotlights over the acropora tank, maybe 150w each? or 70w? *shrug*
I have purchased a number of different LED spotlights from superbrightleds.com. 5 decent lamps will set you back a couple hundred bucks, a good investment for nano reef lighting
Daytime shot of his tanks if anyone wants to see it . Those are 150's I think .

Beautiful tank. Any additional details on the spots? I have been seaching for a nice Japanese led spot set-up for my non-photosynthetic nano. Jake, any details on the set-up you are using also?
Not to rabble rouse, but good thing this is in Japan or else Orbitech might sue! Lol. But seriously, it looks great, and I think this example illustrates how absurd the idea of a patent on a certain lighting technology with regards to reef keeping really is. I think Orbitech should try to sue the LED makers for making LED's which CAN be used for maintaining marine organisms. Cree or Philips should step in and called foul on Orbitech since the patent has pretty much killed any competition & development in the LED aquarium lighting market. So far no smaller company wants to step up to Orbitech since they have VERY deep pockets ($150 million in contracts). So it may require a larger LED maker to get involved to actually get the patent dropped… either by refusing to sell to them or by taking them to court. The fact that Orbitech doesnt actually make what they have patented in application shows the absurdity of it all. Its not like those LED's of various colors are being made JUST for Orbitech, or JUST for aquariums even. Maybe LED makers will just make the components for DIYers modular enough to undermine the patent anyways…
Which lamps would you recomend? I see a whole bunch and dont know what to look for>
I've only used a single light for a couple months now and coincidentally just upped to four lights today. I don't have near enough experience or results to start suggesting anything one way or another. Trying to figure it out is a big part of the fun. This is a picture of the tank with just the three narrow angle blue LEDs on. http://www.reefbuilders.com/wp-content/gallery/le...

Anyone notice the AMAZING SPS nano tank in the picture here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/SyndicateD...
WOW.
Put one of these over your tank…

OCD is a wonderful thing in reefkeeping. The Asians certaily have a few up on us! Great tanks.
Jon, the fish lamp isn’t for aquarium purposes
Doesn’t meean someone wouldn’t try to use it. That light is for general lighting on fishing boats and for evening/night collecting lighting to attract the fish. Now, if you are looking for a lower cost version of the AI check out http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=512.
Jake do you have any recommended fixtures for the LED spots? I was looking for ones that accept medium base bulbs, had barn doors, and that are clip on. Thx.
Mike, I am still looking for the perfect fixture like you describe. For now I am just using generic spotlights from the hardware store. I would love to find some clip-ons like those featured in the image of this post.
Jake, these are what I have been looking at buying these Artemide lights http://www.ylighting.com/art-tolclip.html and adding barn doors http://www.filmandvideolighting.com/baforetcpa.html to them. The doors would have to be colormatched in silver. Considering the price of what the spots are selling for in Japan the price really isnt that bad. What do you think? I think it is do able. I know it isn’t true JDM but it visually does the job and a sick set-up could be made.
