The Megaplug AV 200 from Actiontec is a plug and play network extending adapter which easily networks not only your high bandwidth needs like Audio and Video but also more critical electronics like your aquarium controller. Installation could not be any easier. Step 1: open the box, step 2: plug the Megaplug directly into a wall socket, step 3: connect the ethernet cables to your megaplug, router and aquarium controller and off you go. The MegaPlug AV 200 is an essential piece of kit for aquariums which are too far from your home router, or impractical to link with an extra long ethernet cord. The only slight drawback to this network extender is that it must be plugged in directly to the outlet; as we quickly learned, the Megaplug didn’t work when plugged into a power strip, as indicated by the ‘directions’. The Megaplug may work with a simpler extension cord but we haven’t tried so we cannot say for sure. Either way, $125 will quickly and painlessly network your aquarium controller, big thanks to Brian Blank and Actiontec for sending along the demo pair of Megaplugs. So this basically turns your power lines into an ethernet connection?

Mike, you are correct in that it uses the power line to conduct an ethernet signal but you need an adapter on both ends of the line.

Thanks for the write-up Jake. The Actiontec MegaPlug AV 200 can handle speeds of up to 200 mbps so they blazing quick and also a great fit for your home entertainment center! You should be able to use up to eight units around the house on one circuit so you can add a connection in the game room or hook up your home office, entertainment center or whatever else you want pretty easily.

I know we tend to add plenty of eyesores around the tank with all our super cool gadgets and cords galore that can make even the most supportive “better half” cringe. This is a great way to eliminate stringing Ethernet cable across the room and tap into all the potential you uber-control has built in!

Who uses wired networks anymore? For that price, you can setup a wireless router and get a wireless bridge or wireless game adapter to connect your controller. Just another option…

Alex, it’s all about reliabilty and security. That is why the Apex remote display is also wired.
