So you know how normally when we have a giveaway the winner is chosen by randomly selecting from the comments? This aquarium Stimulus Program is not going down like that. We have in our posession a spankin new 250 watt mogul base 10K/20K lamp from Reefbrite; we’d like to it giveaway to someone who can utilize the bulb to it’s full potential and eventually report back their successes and or challenges when using this bulb. Just to refresh your memory, this lamp has two built-in inner envelopes that, in this case, are two envelopes of different colors. The lamp alternates the use of the envelopes each time it is turned on and off. For more details visit our introductory post on this exciting new metal halide lamp concept. To be considered to receive this lamp, please be able to communicate to us in the comments how you intend to put the Twinarc to good use and the Reef Builders staff will discuss the proposed applications and select the entry which shows the most promise, or at least originality. If it comes down to the wire on more than one entry we may erect a poll to include the wider reefing community on the selection of the finalist. Some of the obvious prerequisites for using this lamp include a good sized mogul base reflector, high quality electronic ballast and a timing device. We’re all looking forward to reading what everyone comes up with.

Son of a…no line? WTF
Alright here it goes….
Everyone likes recieving better than giving. But, for every coral grown in the tank I will give you, Yes you Jake Adams, one frag from all of my beautiful, rare corals. Wow what a value.
Shipping not included)
We went to CRASE in Oklahoma this last weekend and won 1 of these bulbs. We have a 155 gallon bowfront and are currently running OLLLLLD 20k bulbs and NEED replacements! We just put the TwinArc bulb in last night and it’s working great so far. So…if we are chosen we will only have to purchase 1 new bulb!!!!!!! Yaaaaaay! We talked to the lady at the conference and she told us all about the bulb. I Loooove the look of 20k, but our corals need some growth….This bulb is perfect. I’m in love. It’s meant to be….so choose me.
I’ll write you a 10 page blog about the results if you would like…or maybe just a page, whatever you prefer.
If I win it will go over my 30 gallon reef/cuttlefish tank and my sps will thank you very much as would I.
Hi Guys! I’m Andrea and I’m Italian. I study Biology in Trieste because i want to become a Marine Biology. I have a 240 Liters Reef Aquarium (i think it’s about 60 US gallons!). I work for an Aquarium Shop in order to afford this beautiful but often very expensive hobby. I heard about this new TwinArc lamp, but i haven’t already seen it in my country! My dream is to work in the reef world, maybe like a researcher, or also to study coral and coral’s propagation. If you would like to give me this lamp, I will be very grateful and I would be very interested in recognizing effects on my tank! Bye bye
I could tell you all how I would put this bulb over my three MH bulb frag tank and report back to you my successful coral growth compared to my 175’s and 250’s. But…..I think you should give it to Andrea. Sounds like she could use it. My dreams have become reality. And Jake doesn’t need any of my frags. -Robert (Nice little contest RB!)
I’m currently setting up a small frag tank to add to my 160 gallon SPS reef. I think my set up would be perfect for this application because I could compare the growth rates of my frag tank corals to those in my display where I utilize strictly 20K bulbs. I would be able to help answer the question: Is this bulb, with its dual kelvin rating, able to provide better growth rates while maintaining the excellent color of a 20k bulb.
I would be willing to share pictures and document the progress on a weekly or monthly basis.
I have lots of different types of corals to test also, acros, montis, chalices, zoo’s. All may show differing responses to such a lighting set up.
This light would fit my frag tank perfectly.
WOW, just what I need. I won a 250w eletronic balist at MACNA and don’t have any 250w bulbs. I am sure it would make my Hawaiian Endemic fish aquarium look great. And I promise to buy you a few beers next time I see you.
What’s up with all the bribes you guys? Guess we should have arbitrary give aways more often. I liek a few of the ideas so far, keep them coming. This is turning out to be a fun process.
I don’t know if I’m sold on the “twin-arc” feature but hell if I could win one I’d use it
@mike, the whole point of this giveaway is to identify someone who can put the twinarc concept through it’s paces and report back on how their corals reacted to having part time 10K and part time 20K light. If nothing else, the single colored Twinarcs at least give you two lamps for the price of one, meaning that they should last almost twice as long as a normal, single envelope metal halide lamp.
I am posting on here to tell you that Ashley should win the bulb! She has an awesome tank and lots of frags that need good lights to grow. I know if she wins this bulb and her frags grow crazy she would love to frag them and give them to her friends (like me) for free! We also have a 200 gallon reef ready tank we are setting up shortly and need to purchase lighting for it as well. If we can see Ashley’s tank fully lit up with your bulbs it just much sway us to buy your products as well. :O) Good Luck Ashley…hope you didn’t mind I said you would frag your stuff for free! LOL
Lot’s of great responses everyone, keep em coming! Look forward to seeing who’s the lucky reefer!
@Jake, always knew I should read the full post before replying, I mean you guys put the effort to type it in and all
So what would I do with one of these. I would definitely toss it over my full stony reef. Its not your standard sized reef but more of a cube in shape (quasi-cube) which lends for some interesting lighting configurations because of the front to back depth. Currently I’m working with an assortment of DE 250w halides and T5s, but I can always switch up the lighting on one side to see how it affects the growth & coloration of some corals. While some rearranging of the lighting scheme will need to be done to accommodate the SE fixture it’s something I’m sure can be done with a little bit of tinkering and rearranging. The reef itself is comprised of literally over 100 different stony corals, most of the SPS variety, however only a few are frags most of which are grown in and encrusted quite a bit. Although I’d put the bulb over the area with a couple frags are as well as the more mature corals to get a feel for growth and color of both frags and more fully matured specimens.
Included in the reporting of the bulb will be an extensive diary, with photographs taken on a weekly basis both from the side and from the top of the tank, under the water’s surface, to give a visual representation of the coral growth and colors are changing (if they do). Also some comparison photos from the other side of the tank of similar corals to see how they grow, although I realize there are tons of other factors involved in growth, like flow *wink*. My photographic skills while not extensive, are quite adequate enough that it doesn’t look like I took the photos with a point & shoot easy cam, so the quality of the photos will be clear and defined, not a fuzzy blob.
I don’t have a frag tank that needs lighting, I don’t need this bulb as a replacement for an older one, I’ll be using this bulb to conduct some indirect research on its effectiveness over a period of at least 6 months (assuming my corals don’t crash as a result of the bulb
).
Plus if I get the bulbs, will bribe any of the RB staff with complementary frags of anything in my tank
AS luck would have it i am about to buy some new bulbs for my 210 gallon soft coral reef so if you give me one i can compare it to the one i am going to buy and have some good feedback for you , my setup are already SE 250 Hamilton ballast on timers with vho supplement acintic . thanks alot for considering me.
I will place this beautiful light over my new custom-built 70 gallon modernist-in-style reef cube, creating a shimmering effect that will be the talk of the town.
I will use it to self tan and promptly report back to you which spectrum provides a better bronzing on my pasty white skin…
seriously though Ill put it in use over my Propagation system and track growth and color improvements for you
I thought the self tanning thing was WAAAAAY original though LOL
Jake, I saw your lecture on gyre flow and really enjoyed it (sent a couple of tweets during your talk @aquatic_hamster). Please consider giving this bulb to Ashley who posted above. She is just going to metal halide and actually won 1 of these bulbs in OKC. Winning this bulb will also make her very happy, and when she is happy everybody else in her household is happy!
*Big cheesy grin*
Then I’ll have an escuse to buy a bigger tank… watch out wifey!
So is there going to be a winner? Or is it to late for a comment because there are no new post.
Currently tryin to get the best of both worlds by running a 14K bulb over my 130G mostly sps tank. I have been wanting to try this bulb but haven’t heard any feedback on it up to this point. I run (2)400W 14Ks for 10hrs daily which are controlled by my Aquacontroller III Pro so I could program in 5 hrs of each color per bulb. Can’t wait, hope I win.
Cheers,
woops…..just read that it 250W only. Just my luck.
