We’ve all been had our share of “oh no’s” and quick adjustments turning into leaks, cracks and plenty of other not-so-fun things. Rescue Tape is a definite must-have for these Murphy’s Law moments for DIY and anyone in the hobby—even if you never use it! This self-sealing, stretchable and flexible silicon tape creates a quick and easy repair on plumbing, electrical cords and just about anything else you can imagine—even under water.

This stuff is tough and gives you an air and water-tight seal that can withstand high pressure (up to 950 PSI), heat (up to 500° F and flexible down to -85° F) and can insulate electrical cords and connections. Having a roll or two on hand will save you emergency trips to the hardware store for that quick adjustment to a pump line that turns into a nasty leak at 10 p.m. on a Sunday night.

This type of tape has been used in the military for years. I’ve personally used it back in my jet-fixing days in the US Navy and it worked wonders on electrical lines even with jet fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid on them. I even commandeered a roll for my personal use and helped patch a blown radiator hose halfway between San Diego and Las Vegas, so needless to say we were quite excited to see this finally appear in the consumer market.

Rescue Tape even comes in a variety of colors, much better than the ugly orange used back in the military, so all you color-coding nuts have your choice of yummy flavors. The company has been pretty visible at industry events across the country so check them out online and definitely stop by their booth and see it in person—you’ll definitely be an instant fan. One roll of 1” x 12’ Rescue Tape retails for around $9.95 online. For reef clubs, the company offers an affiliate program so you can sell the product through your website and earn money for your club on each sale.

If it only sticks to itself how does it make a water proof seal?

When you wrap you stretch and then it “relaxes” back. Since its really tight against the surface and the layers of the tape provide the strength, you wrap it over itself a few times it glues itself together. Then it’s so tight around the surface that nothing gets through. It’s rocking stuff, you have to check it out if you ever see it around.

IMO, it is because of posts like this that make RB’s the best hobbiest web site for reefing pearls of wisdom!

I LOVE rescue tape. I use it all the time in the lab, especially when I inevitably have to join two pieces of plumbing that are not the same diameter–just put them end to end and wrap the tape. It’s good to high pressures as well. I used them to modify a pair of crutches too :)

@jstone — Looks to be similar and I’ve used and have seen a lot look-alikes in the past with not so good results. Having handled and used Rescue Tape, I have to say it’s works excellent and as advertised.

@Christina — EXCELLENT! Glad you shared your examples :)

If you’ve ever driven I-15 from So Cal to Vegas during the day in June, you know how DANG hot it gets. My radiator hose burst around Baker (home of the worlds tallest thermometer!) and this type of tape saved the day! I was able to get all the way to LV where I could pick up a new hose, of course I could have let it ride….

This stuff truly is the BOMB. Seems gimicky to the point that I offered my dad a role and the king of gadgets and tools turned it down! It’s NO GIMICK – I used it to insulate an abbraded cord, quick coverings for soldered connections in an emergency light ballast rewire. Awesome stuff to have on hand.

We should get them to do a cheesy commercial like this for the aquarium hobby…
