skoner1

Now that the cone protein skimmer bandwagon is in full swing, it’s time for a recap of which company is making what. With all the new skoners popping up these days, you might be overwhelmed at the choice of cone protein skimmers on the market. No fear because Reef Builders is here with the full rundown on all the skoner models we’ve reported in on in just the last few months. Hit the read link to read about a skoner that’s right for you.

ATB- The original cone protein skimmer maker still has more models than anyone else but the competition is hot on their tail. The hang-on skoner should be coming to market soon.

Warner Marine- Although WM was the second company to announce a cone, they have yet to get their skoner to market. We hear that some shipments of the k1 are on their way and this model is one which we are very anxious to test out.

Royal-Exclusiv/Vertex- The forthcoming Alpha series should be hitting US shores any day now. With a Red Dragon under the hood this cone skimmer line is bound to  stand out in the croded skoner crowd.

Bubble Pioneer- This me-too skoner will likely remain limited to Chinese and other Asian vendors, at least until Coralife decides they want a skoner rebadge.

Skimz Kone- this  skoner seems to be a little better built than all the Chinese injection molded cones but only time will tell if we’ll ever see more than a computer generated rendition.

Eshopps- Since Eshopps does have a couple US dealers, it’s likely that this toy is one of the few Asian skoners that we are likely to see. If you’re considering this than you’re not really in the market for a cone skimmer are you?

Hurricone- This line of partially conical protein skimmers is included in this roundup by default. The body is not really a cone, it just has a slightly larger than usual neck but it makes the roundup in name only.

SWC Cone’s are the best bang for the $$$, and should have made the line up. The 2009 model with the Askoll is pulling 85-90+ SCFH. Thats alot more than ATB 1050 or the Alpha. For large tank owners, this cone should be looked at seriously.

I would say the I-tech is the ‘low cost’ competitor. Good stuff actually… no CNC machined parts, and not all the same pumps, but they aren’t just another clone either, and they are very cost effective from the prices I have heard. I know at least two other skoners that are just “Here’s a picture of an ATB, copy it”… literally, thats what the fabbers in China were told. The thing is, they slap on some POS pump with a crappy air-water ratio and it undermines the whole point of a cone body… you know?

The pumps used on the vertex skimmers are too large for the bodies they put them on… this produces many problems with skimming. Look at the dimensions they use and the pump output vs. all the rest. This is a good example of Tim Allen's 'MORE POWER' at work. The pump from the 170 could run the 200, and the pump from the 200 could run the 250 fine… only problem then is that the necks are too large then too.
